Spain has confirmed it will implement a two-year moratorium for Bulgarian and Romanian workers when their countries join the European Union next month.
Jobseekers from the two Balkan newcomers who will find their access to the Spanish labour market restricted, an announcement by the Spanish ministry of labour confirmed what Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos had said in October.
Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba and Minister for Labour Jesus Caldera, who were visiting Bucharest on Saturday, passed the information onto their hosts.
The limitations will mean that Bulgarians and Romanians who wish to settle in Spain will be required to have a work permit in order to do so.
They will thus be subject to the same limitations, which Spain imposed on nationals from the ten countries, which joined the EU during the last wave of enlargement in 2004.
