"Collapse", a doctor from the emergency hospital in Sofia yesterday spelled out for me the diagnosis of Bulgaria's ailing health care system. All signs are that next year we will be saying the last rites.

Hospitals in Bulgaria have been turned into traders, who do not have the right to manage their budget. The Big Brother watching is the National Health Insurance Fund. But assurance is the last thing that patients get. The holy secret of how taxpayers' money is used for securing Bulgarians' health welfare is known only by a pack of Boards of Directors, who are at the helm of hospitals and more often than not have a political party behind their back. These are the only people, who know how much money flows into the hospitals from the so-called "clinical paths". These are the only people, who share out among themselves the precious money.

The prosaic apple of discord in this battle for life is the limited number of "clinical paths", which could more correctly be called "flows". Once run out of their share of clinical paths, doctors are forced to drive away patients and inevitably turn into their archenemy.

The real apple of discord is the collapse of values in a country, which has pushed to the very bottom of its social hierarchy those that should be cherished the most - doctors and teachers. And as in a dark novel, those who suffer the most are those who are most in pain and need, in our case the patients.

This is not the first time that I would share with you, our readers, the experience of waging the toughest of battles. Of blaming crossed stars and karma for the suffering, just to find out that a doctor's oversight, lack of knowledge or I-don't-give-a-damn attitude is to blame for a life that does not seem worth living any more.

Yet, this is the first time that I will appeal to our politicians. After years of lumbering reforms in Bulgaria's health care system, done by no other than the MPs, patients have the right to not feel abandoned in their struggle, both in terms of treatment and emotional support. And have 6 % of the GDP allocated for funding health care.

Small wonder the budget of the National Health Insurance Fund for next year will end up in court.

Small wonder the calls for donations multiply as if by a magical wand at Christmas time.

And it will be nothing short of a miracle if someone badly needing help, gets it.
