Less than a month before becoming a EU citizen, besides Bulgarian, I've felt deeply ashamed and truly dismayed at the easy-going way with which the country was imposed a sever safeguard clause. While all eyes were fixed on the highly politicized crime and corruption fight, the blow came from a much more practical side.
The export veto on Bulgarian meat and milk producers has come upon them as a bolt from the blue. A harder bolt is the follow-up lack of adequate reaction from agriculture officials who are still hiding away to explain why this happened.
Weren't Bulgarians Olympians top graders in meeting requirements in the farming sector? Weren't all Bulgarian meat factories and dairies fully compliant with the highest - and almost bankrupt-causing - standards of the EU? Who would compensate them for the costly equipment purchases and harmonization with regulations that are no more in use? Whom shall we ask questions, by the way? Ministers are apparently festive with coming Christmas and EU-done-work bonuses.
Bulgaria has no EU-affairs advocate after Meglena Kuneva has been flooring Brussels and Strasbourg to earn her commissioner's job. Where has the zeal and passion in defending Bulgarian interests vanished? Shall the dream of being EU turn out to be a nightmare?
