Bulgaria: Lost in Fog

By Ivelina Puhaleva

People crowding in front of air carriers bureaus, boards showing cancelled, cancelled, cancelled flights. I could not explain in simple words all the ridicule texture of the situation going on for two weeks on Sofia Airport. Officials tend to blame the pending fog, but there have been already some clarifications it was not simply the fog to blame. The apparent unauthorisation of Sofia's only runway, moreover on the eve of Christmas holidays, adds to the mounting stares and flares of indignation in the outskirts of Sofia city.

The blockade due to the thick fog will probably continue for some time on - but the costs of losses and delays would not be compensated. Air carriers refrain from accusing the airport taking much more care after their image. Foreign airports try to marginalize the issue - by not even announcing on their web sites the constantly delayed flights to Sofia.

I have heard and seen a lot, but not a single reasonable answer - shall we enter the EU on crutch?
