Bulgaria: Stolen Lives

By Ivelina Puhaleva

The impermeable fog clouding and cutting off Sofia city from the rest of the world was just a prelude to the black end of this week. The shivering cold and pitch dark that engulfed a bus with 31 commuters entered every Bulgarian home minutes after the news of the road accident near Byala was announced.

The pain and grieve was even worse because a human mistake is most probably the cause of tragedy. I am no authority to blame, but I am an ordinary person, and I have a memory making my head pound with parallels of similar tragedies - again on the eve of key holidays for Bulgarians.

Superstitious people would say God is angry with us, but one of the many injured people on Bulgarian roads said it simply: "How is it possible to drive like this?" How is it possible this question is being repeated over and over again and drivers get even madder on the wheel?

My heart bleeds and I condole with the families of the victims of Bulgaria's raging war - the war on the roads. And please, don't ask who is to blame; the answer would not pay off for the stolen lives!
