A former UK ambassador to Bulgaria claimed in letter he was ashamed of his country for the label it put to Bulgarians and Rmanians as second-class.
Richard Thomas, ex-envoy to Sofia, sent Wednesday the letter entitled "Shameful British bar on workers labels Bulgaria as second-class" to The Independent newspaper.
In three paragraphs he clearly put all changes Bulgaria saw during the five years of his stay in the country, from 1989 to 1994. He blamed UK's government for maintaining the visa regime for Bulgarians and for denying the economic benefits of an addition to Britain's workforce of well-motivated and skilled immigrants.
He also denounced UK for encouraging the country to apply for EU membership and later labelling Bulgaria and Romania as second-class EU members by denying them the working rights.
