Bulgaria: Salute but Mute

By Ivelina Puhaleva

The much awaited birth of Bulgaria's three-hundred-and-something-th party splashed out from the TV screen as real parody. Macho-looking, loose-talking and self-confident General Boyko Borisov finally stepped into the limelight putting an end to speculations whether his GERB will legitimise or play behind the couloirs. After an hour of watching the constituency meeting, I felt slightly disappointed, but stronger was the feeling of sorry for those who could not provide a single logical answer why they were there and what they will do.

Political parties are generically an expression of certain interests - in this case I'm sure they meet the interest of Sofia mayor to play factor in Bulgarian political life. Sometimes I think how far the confronting style of the general would lead him, but last night it came up to me he had already reconciled with it.

Attention! It was all the time about "him", although he is not entitled by law to be whatsoever leader of political formation. He said, he ordered, he scolded, he permitted, he nominated, he elected - wait a minute, is this a party of a Muppet-Pppet show or something? Shall his political fellowmen go beyond those mute saluting ladies and gentlemen staring at their Man of the Year?

Politics making is a collective act and any leader, regardless of his charisma or ambitions, should come up to this reality this or any other morning.
