The German government has unveiled the official logo for its coming six-month presidency of the EU starting in January.

The logo displays the web address of the German presidency eu2007.de, with coloured elements reflecting the German and EU flags.

"I believe we have found a fresh and friendly logo. The logo promotes both the European idea and Germany as an innovative, creative and sympathetic country," a government spokesman has said.

The German presidency logo already hit the news lines before its official launch. In November, Berlin indicated that it prefers to use the presidency image over a special logo promoted by the European Commission for the EU's 50th anniversary to be celebrated in 2007.

In October a jury representing EU institutions and member states last month picked an anniversary logo stating in colourful letters "Together since 1957," referring to the 1957 Rome Treaty which set the ground for the current EU.

On January 1, Germany takes over the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the European Union, the bloc's main decision-making body.

For six months, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be charged with conducting the EU's business and finding answers to tough questions, such as further expansion and the union's ongoing constitutional crisis.

Other issues the German presidency plans to focus on include securing Europe's future energy supplies, cutting down on bureaucracy, and investments climate control.
