Philippines Typhoon Toll Exceeds 1,000

More than 1,000 have been declared dead or missing in the wake of the supertyphoon that struck the Philippines last week. Official figures show that the death toll rose to 425 people with 599 more missing. More than 1 million people were "affected'' by the typhoon, including 20,200 in evacuation centers, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said in a report today. More people have sought shelter with family and friends.
