Typhoons Plunge Philippines in State of National Calamity

Several successive typhoons have taken hundreds of lives and caused millions in damage at the Philippines, driving president Gloria Arroyo to announce a state of national calamity. Arroyo has called upon the government to allocate PHP 1 B for relief to typhoon-hit areas immediately. The Durian typhoon that swept the country has left at least 800 dead or missing, but Red Cross officials think the count may surpass 1,000.
