Palestinian Foreign Minister Smuggles USD 20 M in Suitcase

The Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar smuggled USD 20 M into the Gaza Strip in a suitcase on Tuesday. This has become a common way for the Palestinian Hamas-led government to get funds, security officials said. The government, which took office in March, was deprived of the funds the usual European grantors used to provide. Thus it failed to get millions of dollars in aid and other payments and provide for the salaries of 165,000 state employees. The boycott was meant to pressure Hamas to stop violence and recognise Israel. However, European governments have tried to bypass the Hamas-led government by diverting some money to President Mahmoud Abbas, a moderate form the Fatah party.
