Several days ago I met a guy in a bar, who told me, yawning, that he was dead tired but had a couple of more hours to go because he wanted to see the Bulgarians' volleyball game against Cuba. "I have seen their every single game, and I haven't been getting enough sleep," he confessed. Some hours later triumphant yells erupted from the other side of the bar - Bulgaria had won again. The DJ played the national anthem, a tradition that this particular bar keeps whenever the country wins at a given sport.

This got me thinking of our volleyball players, who have done nothing but win every single game in the past days. Normally sports like volleyball, basketball or ice-skating are somewhere in the periphery of attention tucked away while football dominates, with mainly sports media reporting on them. But when it comes to winning big, we all remember the name of this or that player and start cheering wildly. This is why I would like to take the time and congratulate Bulgaria's volleyball players now, while they are flying high on the wings of victory and the limelight is back on them.

As impressed as I am with their latest winning streak, I am utterly amazed that they managed to achieve all that after the tragedy that struck the team over the summer, when two of the players lost their little daughters in a car accident. Shaking that off and playing strongly as they have been lately is short of a miracle. This is why win or lose in the semis, we should recognize their victory nevertheless - a victory over faith, over circumstances, over life itself.
