Ever since the case of the Christie's auction of a Bulgarian ancient dish, attention has been focused on all issues revolving around pilfered antiques. In just three days the customs agents managed to thwart two major attempts to smuggle precious antiques out of the country. Call me sceptical but this just sounds a bit... trumped up.
There are two options - one is that the case suddenly inspired inexperienced smugglers to try and sell off their family heirlooms and make a fortune and the police were quickly onto them. The other, more plausible one, is that these attempts have been going on successfully for quite a while, until media interest in the matter became too high to neglect them.
Just like in the cases of buildings that collapse, or children who kill their friends, society reacted a day too late for the fair and they just now remembered to guard the dig site where the Christie's auctioned dish was found in the early 1990s. Now archaeologists are furious at National Geographic for claiming that Bulgaria is an El Dorado for looters. The magazine should have focused on the beauty that Bulgaria's ancient temples have to offer. With all the web sites selling off historical Thracian treasures and the reports of foiled smuggling attempts I wonder why those guys at NG would even think looters thrived in Bulgaria.
