"We, British, still lead the world in something. Unfortunately, it is tabloid journalism". A phrase in a British broadsheet that I have remembered from my university years. It pops up in my mind now that humiliating and flagrant lies about Bulgaria fill the British tabloids' pages.

There are two problems with this. First, much of this is not true (e.g. The Sun figures on HIV-positive Bulgarians and its fears of AIDS explosion in the UK). Second, on the very next page comes an ad about how nice it would be to boast a second home in the Bulgarian sun.

This is a double-standard policy that will bring woes not only to the Bulgarians, but to the British as well. The average British reader may feel nothing but insulted for being taken for such a fool. And those, who have come to Bulgaria and settled here, have already stood up in revolt. A couple from Wilmslow, Cheshire, wrote us a letter on Friday, saying "We are so committed to our Bulgarian dream that we are giving our UK house away in a competition for 25 pounds......... but that's another story!"

Another story it may be but I truly doubt that the prestigious British newspapers that this very same couple wrote to will be willing to publish their letter. The serious press is happily oblivious of the obvious - anti-Bulgarian raids serve the interest of the government alone and work because of the huge gaps in knowledge about the country.

It is not that I would urge the government to follow Romania's example and demand an official denouncement by the British cabinet. One had better stay away from the junk food news. It is gobbled up, but is very unhealthy.

P.S.: Dear forum participants, following your criticism as to why we published The Sun "crap", let me make this clear. We do our best to make you as well informed as possible.

We need your support so Novinite.com can keep delivering news and information about Bulgaria! Thank you!
