APEC Summit Opens in Hanoi

The leaders of 21 nations are in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi for the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit. Participants at the 14th APEC summit have reportedly agreed on a statement urging North Korea to give up its nuclear programme. Prior to the start of the summit, US President George W. Bush held a series of bilateral talks with regional leaders in an effort to keep up the pressure on Pyongyang. The talks are also likely to focus on global trade and on ways to break down trade barriers.
