Bulgarian, Romanian Migrants to Bring "AIDS Epidemic" to UK

Britain is facing an AIDS epidemic due to immigrants, a problem, which will hit a critical point when Romania and Bulgaria join the EU next year, the British The Sun wrote in its latest issue.

The article cites medics, according to whom two thirds of all new cases of AIDS infection are in immigrants. None of these foreigners seeks treatment, making it highly likely to infect the rest of the population, medics warned last night.

Bulgaria and Romania are among the nations with the highest AIDS rates in Europe, the Sun writes.

Almost 59,000 Brits have an HIV infection that leads to AIDS. There were almost 8,000 new cases last year and 70% were in immigrants, mostly from Africa and Eastern Europe, the Health Protection Agency revealed.

The findings emerged from an HPA report compiled after health chiefs realised immigration had doubled from 300,000 in 1995 to 600,000 in 2004. Many fail to get help even two years after entering the UK "despite showing symptoms of illness" creating the danger of a viral explosion in some cases.

"It is ironic that the Government are encouraging people to take precautions to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases when a lot of the new cases are coming from overseas," Andrew Green of Migration Watch comments.

Immigrants are also responsible for 70% of TB and malaria incidences, the report said. The HPA gathered infectious disease statistics from GPs and hospitals between 2004 and 2006.
