I would have never paid attention to another scrap of news adding to the old-fashioned and ineffective compote of poorly learnt nationalism tackling the issue of a Macedonian minority in Bulgaria. The voices heard from the respectable European Parliament in the last few days, however, are far from deserving respect, least discussion. The vague wording of a suggested recommendation to Geoffrey van Orden's report looks more than naГЇve than serious.
Putting aside the traditional Bulgarian sentiments on this issue, I was even more surprised on the ignorance of the MEPs who tabled the proposal on the depth Balkans history and bilateral relations. I do not believe there is any malicious intent in the motion, but I fear that the ambition to focus the public limelight on whatever "bad" issue would sometimes play back bitter jokes.
Not just me, but also the whole Bulgarian society lifted eyebrows in surprise - there is even no room for anger, when you face such commonplace and undefended appeals.
Let's hope that a couple of years, until next EU-wide parliamentary vote, MEPs interested in the voters on the Balkans would take some pain to win their confidence.
