Bulgaria to vote for European Parliament Members on May 13, 2007, socialist party member and MP Kristian Vigenin has suggested.
Simeon II National Movement (SIINM) MP Hristina Hristova also supports the idea, Trud daily informed.
The justification for the choice lies in the fact that Romania will also vote for its MEPs on the same date. The second reason is that Bulgaria has promised to elect its EU observers by December 31, 2007.
The idea to vote for Bulgaria's MEPs at the local elections Vigenin describes as irrelevant because it would be difficult to explain to people the criteria for the mixed vote.
However, his party is not unanimous as to the way the MEPs should be elected. There is not a firm opinion whether the observers should be listed on a joint national ballot or the country should be divided into six regions that coincide with the so-called planning regions.
The realisation of the single ballot would be easier. On the other hand, if an MEP is elected by a single region he/she would feel more responsible for his/her voters, Vinegin points out.
Currently Bulgaria has 18 - and Romania 35 - MP observers to the European Parliament. They represent the two aspiring states respectively, attend sessions and body meetings, but are deprived of the right to vote.
