Serbia Proclaims New Constitution

World | November 8, 2006, Wednesday // 00:00

Serbia's parliament officially promulgated country's new Constitution on Wednesday, Serbian media reported. President Boris Tadic, PM Vojislav Kostunica, Serbian Patriarch Pavle, diplomats, politics and representatives of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts attended the official ceremony. In the preamble of the new Constitution it is written Kosovo has a wide autonomy, but is still an integral part of Serbia. The new primary law contains 206 articles. The voting for a new constitution was prompted after the union between Serbia and neighbouring Montenegro was formally dissolved. The approval of a new primary law enshrines the UN-run Kosovo as an integral part of the country. Serbian voters approved the new constitution on 30 October, reasserting Serbia's claim over the breakaway Kosovo province.
