Bulgaria: Change in the Air Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

Bulgaria is still a country small and peaceful enough that any single instance of a violent death makes it to the news. Some are appalled, because they are sick and tired of the bloodthirstiness of the media. However there is a good side to this - it all means that we live in a relatively calm country. The sad thing is that this seems to be changing, and what's even sadder is that the early signs of change are visible in schools already.

For some reason violence seems to be blooming in Bulgaria's schools lately, and I am not talking about bullies. Just hours ago the news broke of a teen who smacked a classmate over the head with a chair. These past month mothers were shocked to find their daughters wore brass knuckles to school to teach each other a little something about talking to the wrong boys. Several cases of violent, bloody fights in schools made many wonder where this world is going to.

Somehow instead of learning about maths, science or literature, students now come back from school equipped with new skills. Skills like kick-boxing, acid-dripping sarcasm, and a hardened shell. So hard it makes taking a swing at someone's head with a chair easy.

Children are the future, but if guards at schools are needed to make sure no one gets killed inside rather than to stop outsiders from coming in, then that future does not look like a very bright one.
