Torrential rains flooded several villages in Central and Southern Portugal forcing over 150 people out of their homes, officials said. Residents of Tomar, which is 150 km north of Lisbon were evacuated after the Nabao River overflowed, civil defense officials said. The river reached its highest level since the 1989 floods when the city and several surrounding villages were destroyed. Torrential rains poured all weekend flooding more than 100 houses and stores. Strong wind knocked down trees and electricity poles and cut off roads. The Navy and the Army have been called for support, civil defense officials said. According to forecasts the danger of more floods has not passed yet since the heavy rains will continue untill Tuesday. Nine of Portugal's 18 districts were placed on yellow alert and five on orange, which are the third and second most serious weather warning levels in a scale ranging from the lowest green to the highest red.
