Bulgaria: The Voice of Unborn

By Ivelina Puhaleva

An army of jars lined and flowered like soldiers will meet at the gates the officials of the National Health Fund at the start of the week. Flowers were chosen to be the preferable - and hopefully more understandable - channel of communication for thousands of Bulgarian childless women. Struggling against the human prejudice, they appealed for keeping the already landed right - to have financial support in the medical treatment of sterility. Amid the ongoing chaos in the health system of Bulgaria, deplores overt "Bulgarian population heading to the extinct" sound like a mockery when a workable solution is just scrapped. Even though the program was not all-women comprehensive, it still nurtured the hopes - and family budgets - of some 1,500 couples craving for a child. They do not care for the demographic statistics, but the men in power would have never tackle this issue without addressing to the individual - the mother and father of each Bulgarian child of the future.
