MEXICO TO PLAY FRIENDLY AGAINST BULGARIA IN WORLD CUP WARM-UP

Sports | February 22, 2002, Friday // 00:00

Mexico will play Bulgaria instead of Macedonia in a World Cup warm-up in San Diego on March 13, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced. The game against Macedonia was cancelled due to "internal problems currently faced by the Macedonian national federation". Mexico's clash with Bulgaria will be a replay of the two side's second-round match in the 1994 World Cup finals in the United States, and also at the same stage in the 1986 Mexico World Cup. In 1994 Bulgaria won that match on penalties in extra time, part of Mexico's long history of failure from the penalty spot. In 1986, it was Mexico who defeated the European side and moved to the next round. Bulgaria failed to qualify for this year's finals in Japan and South Korea.
