China Reviews Death Penalty

China says thousands of death sentences each year will reviewed by the Supreme People's Court from January to prevent wrongful convictions. Last year, China executed at least 1,770 people, according to Amnesty International, more than in all other nations. The move strips China's provincial courts of powers delegated to them in 1983. Chief justice Xiao Yang said supreme court reviews would give accused "one more chance" to put their cases, DW reported. In recent years Chinese media have exposed numerous miscarriages of justice by provincial courts, prompting public condemnation. China has 68 crimes that can lead to execution by bullet or injection. Half of them are non-violent, such as fraud and property offences. Some experts estimate China passes up 8,000 death sentences each year.
