Second terms always pose a problem. With nothing left to run for, the president strives to live up to his first term, burdened with the knowledge that power is slipping away.

Amidst calls for and against strengthening the presidency, Georgi Parvanov, the first Bulgarian head of state to be re-elected, will have one more puzzle to solve over the next five years. The puzzle of the chasms.

It was out of the chasm gaping between the politicians and the people that firebrand Volen Siderov was born. It was out of the chasm gaping between the Socialist Party and the social policy that leftist supporters sided with nationalists. It was out of the chasm gaping between the rightist supporters and a former communist president that the first decided not to vote at all.

The party of President Georgi Parvanov now looks like an old lady, still eager to be wooed. In terms of foreign policy, health care and social services, the more than one-hundred-year-old Socialist party is as close to the right-wing parties as it could be. It left the spacious territories in the leftist parts of the political spectrum empty and eager someone to conquer them. And thus invited Volen Siderov to fill in yet another chasm.

The elections results however proved Volen Siderov is no panacea to the chasms.

The president in office will have to figure it out.
