SIMEON II: MOVEMENT IS OPEN NOW

Politics | June 18, 2001, Monday // 00:00

Simeon II told the news conference after the elections that the Simeon II National Movement (SNM) will seek to govern the country in a coalition, quoted by BTA, Bulgarian Press Agency. He did not elaborate on the desired partners for such a coalition but said the movement is opened to all formations that share the main ideas of the SNM programme: sustainable economic growth, accelerated accession to EU and NATO, eradicating corruption, increased responsibility for power holders and stable legislation compliant with EU law. Simeon II said that SNM is prepared to take on its share of political responsibility for the governance of the country. According to preliminary data, SNM has won 40-44 per cent. SNM`s policy on macro-economic stability and Euro-Atlantic integration will continue on the present course, SNM secretary Plamen Panayotov said. `Given the majority that we have won and under normal circumstances, the next parliament will serve out its term,` Simeon II said. `The first steps that the new parliamentary group will take will include an anti-corruption legislative programme: a decisive reduction of licensing procedures, ` Panayotov said. Measures will be taken to prevent state employees from taking bribes and seeking other personal gains. Substantial changes in the law on the access to the files of the former state security are also planned to put an end to the abuse of this issue for political purposes. In response to a question on the possibility that a future government facing an opposition by the Union of Democratic Forces and the Bulgarian Socialist Party may be unstable, Simeon II replied that `this is an issue of specifying mandates. ` Spontaneous team spirit is not a typical feature of parties and coalitions at the outset of their parliamentary life. `Give us some time and things will start happening,` Simeon II said also. Asked when his children will become fluent in Bulgarian, Simeon II stated that he brought them up to be honest people. `Their linguistic and exact science knowledge is sufficient to enable them to make their contribution,` he said, adding that if they start studying the language too quickly that might be misconstrued as a preparation for the restoration of the monarchy.
