Bulgaria: The Naughty Kid Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

Bulgaria seems to be the naughty, and slightly retarded beggar kid knocking on heaven's door. Pardon me, I meant the EU door. The kid that constantly gets a slap on the wrist every time it reaches up to some piece of candy, eyes all big and round and filled with hunger and awe - oh yes, that's us.

And while we have readily assumed that a bit of being slapped around is worth it if the result is getting into the EU, the line should be drawn somewhere. When someone tries to convince a kid that has a sweet tooth that what he really wants are veggies, the kid usually just wipes them under the tablecloth or gives them to the dog, when others aren't looking. And then he goes and eats all the candy he wants, in riot against the system, ending up with rotten teeth. Watch closely, for this may happen in Bulgaria very soon.

When EP officials start telling Bulgarian voters that they SHOULD exercise their democratic right to vote for Parvanov, it only makes me want to go and vote for Siderov just in spite of them, instead of not voting at all. It's stupid, it probably wouldn't be that good for the country, but it's exactly because of people like Poettering and Wiersma that Siderov got so many votes in the first place. Bulgarians are simply tired of all the do's and don'ts of the EU and when some person who's never even set foot in the country or seen how we really live tells us who should be our president - well that's taking it a tad too far. No wonder Ivan Kostov - the ever-opposing rightist felt compelled to turn to his "credo partner" Poettering and say a big fat NO.
