The percent of the people supporting Bulgaria’s entry into NATO has increased for the last three years, a survey of the Sociology Institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences shows. According to the survey entitled “Bulgaria and NATO – dynamics of public opinions” a total of 76,9% of the respondents have positive attitude towards the country joining NATO, with 40% of them pledging full support.

In the period 1999-2001 an increase of 13,2% was registered in the number of Bulgarians, who see NATO as the best foreign policy guarantee for Bulgaria’s security. In December 2001 they accounted for 51%. Among the people who prefer the security of a union with the Russia are elderly people, who live in small towns and villages.

Almost two-thirds of the Bulgarians expressed the opinion that following NATO membership more money will have to be earmarked for the country’s defense. The increase in the military budget enjoys a relatively high rate of approval. In 2001 it went up 20,1% over 1999.

Opinions on the deployment of NATO troops on the territory of Bulgaria diverge, the survey shows. Those who are against it still outnumber the supporters. Experts attribute the fact to the lack of information. Unlike that the policy for EU entry is supported with complete consensus. More than 90% of the respondents want to see Bulgaria full EU member.
