Record Number of Foreign Movies Nominated for Oscar

Society | October 20, 2006, Friday // 00:00

A total of 61 movies have been nominated for Oscar in the Foreign Movie section, setting a real record, media reported.

Among those 61, however there is just one Oscar debutant country - Kazakhstan.

Some of the other entries are Pedro Almodovar's Volver, Pan's Labyrinth" by Guillermo del Toro and Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki's "Lights in the Dark."

There is a mystery around Kaurismaki's movie however, for no one is sure yet whether the director would agree to compete, for he pulled out of the race in 2003, protesting the war in Iraq. If he does the same this year, his country may not be allowed another entry.

Last year 58 movies fought for the Oscar in the Foreign Movie cathegory.
