Baby Boom Threatens Bulgarian Teenagers

Society | October 18, 2006, Wednesday // 00:00

The number of underage Bulgarian girls who give birth before they turn 16 has doubled in comparison with last year, statistics show.

Such births should be reduced because this is an alarming tendency, Dr. Stoyan Tanchev from the delivery ward of the University Hospital in the northern city of Pleven believes.

"The solution to this problem must become an enduring state policy. Educational campaigns on safety measures against unwanted pregnancy among youths are highly necessary", he says.

"Young people have to understand that there are many risks behind creating and giving birth to a child at immature age", Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tanchev adds.
