Bulgaria: Being National

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Unlike the approaching elections 2006, the latest week was marked by news from the world of sports - alas, sad ones. The decision of Bulgaria's side captain Stilian Petrov to quit the team under mentorship of legendary Hristo Stoitchkov brought to light a mountain of bubbling problems in the national football. The suspected personal rift between Stoitchkov and Aston Villa's player is just a nuance of the storm plaguing this popular game. After the national football was helmed by the legendary USA'94 squad, which wrote down a historic page for Bulgaria by becoming the fourth best in the world, scandals are queuing in the news far more often than live scores or applauses. Referees beaten up, corruption in League A, controversial transfers, almost-zero attention to the kids' training - make up the picture of football lately. Not disputing his fame and success as a player, Stoitchkov cannot boast much as a referee. His legacy was not worth envy at all - given the above said existed before him. But Bulgarian football is now in his hands and the hands of his former teammates - many of them on key football management positions. And their love for the game and the fans demand for playing teamwork - on national level - and teach the younger in it.
