The Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church Maxim served a mass in memory of Bulgaria’s national hero Vassil Levski, who was hanged February 19 129 ago. The mass was said at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral despite the restorations that are underway there. Vassil Levski was called "the Apostle of Freedom" by the Bulgarian people for his fight against the Turkish yoke. He established numerous revolutionary committees and started preparing the people for a general uprising. He was captured by the Turks in late 1872 and was hanged on 19 February 1873. President Parvanov honored the memory of Levski by putting flowers in front of the monument of the apostle in Sofia. An official ceremony was organized by the Committee “Vassil Levski” and the Sofia municipality. Bulgaria’s hymn was played and Levski’s memory honored with one minute silence.
