Bulgaria: Where Declaration's Not at Place

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Sparkles of a new spate of fire have been exchanged between Bulgaria's top diplomats perceived by the media as echoes of inter-coalition clash over the choice of EU commissioner. But no public discussion has been even hinted by the rulers, as if the issue is just another political brawl. The strangest thing is that both the opposition and the majority in parliament seem to be completely uninterested in the stuff, while complaining they have no laws to consider and vote. To make their time reasonable, they preferred to play roles and set up a kind of tribunal. The Parliament's reaction to the jibe of an EP Bulgarian observer has been too exaggerated. It reminded of - at least I thought so - past times when the collective convened to scold any freely voiced opinion. Why have the MPs forgot the European Parliament is a convention of free speech and free opinion? How wanted them to take stance over an individual statement? How are they to judge? I'm really amazed that at a time when Bulgaria was strongly encouraged to wrap up its membership preparations, the Parliament obviously thinks Christmas is coming.
