Bulgaria: EU New Year

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Christmas and New Year preparations and celebrations usually take up speed after October, but the European Union has made a reason for Bulgaria to open New Year festivities a trimester earlier. The confirmation of our country's accession on January 1 next year has set a wave of relief among authorities and a bunch of half-smile, half-grunts among ordinary people. Bulgarians are happy that he ghost of "to be or not to be in EU" is now off stage, particularly on the start of a presidential campaign.

Thanks poured in throughout the day - the most important of which, I believe, were addressed to the nations of both Bulgaria and Romania. For the patience, understanding, enormous efforts and endurance to all kinds of reforms and changes adopted under pressure, as well as for the economic price ordinary people and the business are going to pay.

Bulgarians are a people free in mind and tolerant to community members and they will be a huge benefit for each member state and for the EU as a whole. Let's not exaggerate - the threats of "flooding Bulgarians" circulating for some time in other states are just a means of internal debate.

The contribution of Bulgaria and Romania is still to be forecast, but the undisputable pros will be the impetus our countries will give for the EU's institutional reform.
