Bulgaria: No One's Independence

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Days like these face you to considerations and thoughts coming from the deep of your heart. Despite the festive mood that the Day of Independence would have brought, I was in a way overwhelmed with sorrow and grief. For I knew that states and nations can celebrate a political independence, but one's soul and conscience cannot set free in the face of loss. Bulgaria lost one of its fabulous actresses - Pepa Nikolova, who would not let a single face gloomy with the power of her humour, spiritual stamina and endless talent. Bulgaria lost two innocent people - two fiends, two children, a mother. They were independent to choose to live in harmony with people around them, but they were not free to escape the evil of someone's criminal negligence. What is worth for independence, if you are not independent enough to seek justice and to avoid such tragedies. Signals had been sent the deserted building can turn into a killer - but no one listened. Now it is too late. The illness defeated the body, but cannot not take the memory of Pepa from people's hearts. And there they will stay independent! Rest in peace.
