Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok amid rumours of a state coup. While at the UN in New York, the prime minister declared on television "a severe state of emergency". The measure came after tanks took up position around the Thai government headquarters in Bangkok, where they blocked traffic. An army-owned TV station is showing images of the royal family and songs linked in the past with military coups. Thaksin Shinawatra announced he had removed the chief of the army, Thai television reported.
