A "lies" tape sparked the worst unrest in Hungary since the fall of communism and the establishment of democracy in the late 1980s. No matter how persistent claims of a deliberate leakage are, drawing parallels with Bulgaria is unavoidable. Could the same scenario unfold in Bulgaria, where politicians' "lies in the morning, in the evening and also at night" are far from unusual?

No, if we are to trust James Roaf, IMF Resident Representative here. The government's accountability to the fund, he says, leaves little room for manoeuvres and forging economic indices.

No, if we are to trust our instincts. Narrow down the scale and think about Bulgarians' psychology - a well-known joke from the recent past, sadly, tells it all. "The Bulgarians are so obedient that if you tell them, they will be hanged tomorrow, they will ask whether to buy the rope themselves." In Hungary, higher taxes and fees for healthcare and university tuition had prompted protests even before the release of the tape sparked the violent backlash. In Bulgaria, drastic transgressions of human rights in the healthcare sector, among other things, continue to fail to provoke public indignation.

The bets are things won't change much even if after Bulgaria's so-keenly-awaited accession to the European Union the euro-shock turns out to be more of a reality that a scarecrow.

Yet lies are at the bottom of all wrongs.

If we are to trust the Bible.
