Bulgaria: Heat vs. Hot

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Media could frankly say that the outgoing summer was far from the idea of dull. Days of sizzling heat were interspersed with days of hot headlines. If we had a poll on this, the Sofia heating utility story would have for sure won the palm of top scandal. Putting aside the media-tinkling moment, people will sense the consequences of this major swamp of corruption in the following months. Because colder days have reminded us of coming winter when some 300,000 subscribers to the Sofia heating utility will expect a qualitative and well-regulated service. I even do not dare think about a possible moment when the drain of heating will remain cold - because, they say, people refuse to pay the bills. Pardon me? A couple of million levs credited on unpaid bills vs. hundreds of millions of levs being drained to private offshore accounts - how fair does it sound to you? If judgment day was now, I would gladly have replaced it with free heating for Sofia for this winter - to make it equal with the maths.
