Bulgaria: Oktoberfest Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

Bulgaria's presidential candidates are nicely lined up for the integral ballot, and once an official statement comes out in the State Gazette, the gloves come off and we enter the real pre-election battle. I can almost smell the sweet aroma of free kebapcheta in the air and if I listen very closely, I can hear them sizzle on the barbecue. And just thinking about all the litres of beer we gulped in Students' Town before the general elections last year makes my heart pound with excitement. Who said Bulgaria didn't have its own Oktoberfest - we do, only it's called elections.

But wait... last year all these incentives were dubbed illegal. This must be why voters' activity in the mayoral run for Sofia was so low. After all, a large section of Bulgaria's electorate is used to basing their final decision on who fed them the best meat. Now that this option is off the table I wonder how will they ever choose.

Hopefully now people will actually take the time to read some of the platforms and agendas we journalists will dutifully report on. Because the president we elect on October 22 will also be the President who will govern Bulgaria in its first steps as a EU member state.
