Watching, nodding, a scowl on her face or a pat on my back. This is how I remember my teacher on my first day at school, September 15, 197-something. Ten years later I learnt the best life-saving response to most of the teachers' assessments was to be a little bit cynical about them.

Twenty-something years later I am gripped by the feeling that seven million grown-up Bulgarians adopt the same approach in responding to the assessments of their new teacher - Brussels. And I can tell you what the news wire never discloses - there is something very unsettling about being a grown-up back to school.

After a week of hectic meetings both in Sofia and Brussels, the feeling is even more unsettling as the loop around our neck is tightening and the toughest EU scrutiny, legal and financial sanctions look more and more likely. Bulgarians are traditionally sceptical and suspicious of parties and institutions and it is just a small step away before they become just as sceptical and suspicious of Brussels' willingness or ability to put the country on the right track.

The media coverage of the "Brussels officials" events do not do much to change the image of the Brussels officials as the preposterously exacting people, who will just make life more difficult. Neither do the Brussels officials themselves. The EU commissioners were not there to call a spade when the government threw random anti-corruption and anti-crime campaign, or when a number of major deals and concessions were buried in scandals.

The test will clearly not be passed with flying colours on January 1. Will it be because of the idle teacher or the shamming student?
