One in every three women in Bulgaria medically screened has had breast cancer, according to latest medical checks of the disease.

In 2003 alone a total of 3,500 new cases were registered among Bulgarian ladies, half of which at a stage too late to be successfully treated, the national oncological medical center has recently announced.

While a mobile mammography device is touring remote Bulgarian towns and villages to grant women free of charge checks, Sofia hosted a symposium dedicated to the issues of cancer.

Professor Richard Sainsbury was invited to lecture by the organizers, AstraZeneca, to introduce participants with the latest global research on modern ways to treat the disease.

"The ATAC study shows better profile of safety and tolerance to the offered medicine - one of largest recommended in the world of inhibitors," Prof Sainsbury explained.

The forum held at Sofia's Boyana Residence ran under the aegis of President Georgi Parvanov.

Despite recent improvements in the mortality rates, due to better treatments and earlier detection, Bulgaria still has one of the highest mortality rates in the world.

Prof Sainsbury teaches at the Whittington and Middlesex hospitals, and the Royal College of Surgeons. He is Secretary of the British Journal of Surgery Society and Clinical Director of Surgery at UCL Hospitals.
