Dear reader, if you feel like you can't make head or tail of Bulgaria's politics, blame it on the weather and the weird preferences of the electorate, not us. At least this is my conclusion when looking at the latest surveys of the two most highly circulated newspapers in Bulgaria, published Monday.

It is only in the hot summer that voters may call for a cross-breeding between Brad Pitt and Alain Delon to be their president, as a brand new survey of 24 Hours Daily has revealed. High temperatures have apparently mixed up the images of celebrities and presidential candidates in the minds of the respondents, who say the super-president must be young, attractive, married with children, wealthy, moderate, yet with a strong arm. Unfortunately the French had a good reason to chant "Zizou president" in 1998, while the Bulgarians have no reason to pick whomever from the local celebrities and fill the air with his name like fireworks. Not to mention any of the real candidates for president, whose most negligible problem is that they don't look like Brad Pitt or Zizou.

The next season, the season of the actual elections, appears just as promising. My forecast is that the autumn will sober down the electorate, who will understand that the only similarity between Bulgaria's president and a celebrity is their representative function at lifestyle events. My next forecast is that the right-wing supporters, who told local Trud Daily, that they will vote for Socialist President Parvanov, will regain the consciousness that seem to have lost in the summer. While the readers will be painfully reminded surveys are to be read with a huge grain of salt. Especially when conducted by the media.
