Tough Pick

On the day Bulgaria celebrates its Unification, I take a look at the presidential candidates and think hard whether it is even worth traveling the 200 kms to my home town to cast a vote.

Normally when people find all the options hard to choose from it is a good thing, it means that there are a lot of choices. But not now. Not when we literally have to choose the lesser evil. So let's see what are my options here...

There's always President Parvanov, who unfortunately carries the big ugly monkey called communism on his shoulder, and this is a disadvantage that all the "people's candidate" posters in the world won't be able to tune down easily.

Then we have Nedelcho Beronov, who's lived through three-quarters of a century already and whose own brother fears the presidential ruckus may prove too much for the candidate's failing health. He should go to "Extreme Makeover" before he spends any money on posters, someone told me, and I am afraid they may be right.

Not to forget Volen Siderov, who threatens he'd win the elections and rid us of all Bulgarophobes. The standing-trial-for-being-xenophobe Siderov. The same Siderov, who holds his rallies under the inspiring tunes of Wagner with his fist in the air. Imagine him on January 1, 2007 when Bulgaria joins the EU...

There are more candidates, but most are hardly worth an honorary mention, as they are so totally unknown and marginal in the country that I seriously doubt they'd find it easy to gather 15,000 signatures in their favor.

Still, there is some light in the tunnel... Boyko Borisov is not running and Simeon II National Movement have yet to nominate a candidate. I wouldn't get my hopes up, though. It seems ours will be a tough pick again.
