In the heat of pre-election spins some bits of news are easy to overlook, especially if they are good. Caught in the battles between candidates, parties, court orders and accusations, the fact that first-graders in Bulgaria are increasing may not seem like such a big deal, when it is really something to pause and ponder.
Demographic slumps are a problem in many countries, and seeing 2,000 pupils more than last year should have our Social Policy Minister dance with joy, because it shows a turn for the better.
Textbooks are expensive and the cost of preparing a youngster for their first day of class, with the new schoolbag, notebooks, pencils, water paints and all is unbearable for many. Yet the number of pupils is increasing - a testament that something is going right in the country after all. It could be that all the programs for integrating the Roma have finally given fruit, or that the birth rate was really on the rise some seven years ago, or that migrants have come back to the country... It really doesn't matter, because any of these is good news. More students mean more work spots for teachers, more funds allocated to education and hopefully one day - more educated people in Bulgaria.
Now the government just has one little thing to take care of - give those children a chance to study in a good environment, use new books instead of last year's leftovers, sit in freshly painted rooms that have adequate heating in winter and be greeted by a teacher who's truly smiling instead of grinding teeth calculating their miserable pay check. It's not too much to ask, is it?
