Whenever Bulgarians are left with nothing else, we turn to sports. Football, Volleyball, other -balls, gymnastics, wrestling and athletics are our last resort. Because no matter how bad everything else is going, there is at least one area where we rarely fail. True, the national football team has been quite a looser lately, but Levski's successes keep us happy. A fourth place at the Volleyball world championship may also sound like nothing to some nations, but it is a reason to celebrate for Bulgaria. Especially if we take into account what the squad has recently been through, having to bury the young daughters of two of the players.

Philip Videnov's MVP title in the Vivatel Basketball Cup in Varna and Simona Peycheva's gymnastics gold, along with Tezdzhan Naimova's two world junior titles in sprinting, and the medals from the European athletics championship have all given us reasons to be proud of our country.

Yet the website of the volleyball team hasn't been updated in months, athletes protest because they are not getting paid and the state of most sports venues in the country is laughable. It's high time politicians took a look at those Bulgarians who are actually working to save the face of the country abroad. Maybe they could cough up some cash their way, instead of doubling funding for political parties. With the image our MPs create, the money can very well be written off as damage control...
