GROSS EXTERNAL DEBT WENT DOWN

Bulgaria's gross external debt totalled USD 9,894.4 M(73.3% of GDP) in late December 2001, down USD 470 M on the 2000 figure, the National Bank of Bulgaria announced.

Long-term debts amounted to USD 9,338.2 M and short-term debts stood at USD 556.2 M.

Public debt amounted to USD 8,605.2 M, down USD 641.5 M on 2000.

The government debt totalled USD 7,734 M in December 2001, down USD 500.3 M on the year-ago period.

State-guaranteed debt went up by USD 92.9 M to USD 725.3 M.

The external debts of the private sector amounted to USD 1,289.2 M, up USD 171.6 M on December 2000.

Securities account for 50.6% of the country's external debt; the loans account for 47.4% and 2.1% are formed by deposits of non-residents.
