Several weeks ago media were filled up with the heartbreaking story of a family that, through tears, donated the organs of their brain-dead 13-year-old, hoping to help other children. In the meantime the government was prepping a law that would make every Bulgarian a donor by default. Bearing in mind how hard it is to make us sign up for anything we wouldn't get paid for, someone must have found it brilliant to put us all in the donors' lists, unless we go and sign out. But the moral repercussions of such a law are dubious at best. Even the handful of MPs that bothered to appear in Parliament Wednesday stood divided on the issue, so what's left for the nation?

Personally, I think donating an organ is the noble thing to do, but I don't want this, or any other, government to tell me I HAVE to do it. See there is a problem with signing out. Like most people I was absolutely sure I wanted to donate, I would have found the time to declare it. Now if I disagree with the government I have to find the time to go and tell it to a GP I'm not even sure I have, before something happens to me. Knowing myself, I will put this off indefinitely because it just doesn't seem urgent. But if something should happen in the meantime, the weight of the decision may (or may not, MPs still don't know) depend on my family. And this is something I definitely don't want them going through, not in a moment like that.

Then there is the problem with how my organs would be treated. With insufficient funds allocated for transplantations and doctors who don't perform them even if they do have the organs at hand, because they are waiting for the cash first, what's the point of this law? Maybe if the government fixed the hospital mess first, more people would be willing to give their organs without being ordered to do so.
