Last summer it was all about the fairytale former king who turned into a former prime minister. A year later the king has not turned into a frog yet, but his party is croaking in a coalition chorus of three.

At the end of the first year of their tenure and the last stretch to EU entry, centrists, socialists and ethnic Turks blew the whistle for a number of scandalous misappropriations in municipality and state-owned companies, hoping it will be loud enough to be heard in Brussels. Each of the members in the three-party government, born in heavy labour in the middle of August last year, made a sacrifice of what is most cherished and loved.

Prior to that sacrifice, the coalition government brags, it held 55 meetings, adopted 1,669 acts, approved 39 bills and 76 proposals, 324 decrees, 920 decisions and 3 directives. And even pulled through the thorny issue about the restitution of Saxe-Coburg property.

But, as Simeon Saxe-Coburg learned last summer, blue blood is not a prerequisite for political longevity in Bulgaria.

Thanks to the first tenure of the governing coalition, the lesson that the average Bulgarian learned is that haggling and compromises do what blue or any other kind of blood can't. And let politicians tirelessly rattle off statistics, claiming his life is having a ball - unemployment hit a record-low, the percentage of "wealthy Bulgarians" increased five times for the last six years, the seacoast is packed full of tourists, the bright prospect of EU accession is almost blinding.

Not that blinding however to stop this very same Bulgarian see that some have become wealthier by millions, not without the protection of this very same coalition government.
