US President George Bush blamed Iran and Syria for the current violence in Lebanon, saying those nations seek to undermine peace in the region. "The people in Israel and Lebanon have suffered from this current violence, and we realize that the responsibility for this suffering lies with Hezbollah," said Bush at the State Department on Monday. "Responsibility for the suffering of the Lebanese people also lies with Hezbollah's state sponsors - Iran and Syria." Bush said the two nations "seek to undermine prospects for peace in the Middle East" by providing financial support, weapons and training to Hezbollah, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.
"Iranian support of Hezbollah exacerbated the situation," said Bush. "The conflict in Lebanon is part of a broader struggle between freedom and terror that is unfolding across the region, he said. "The freedom agenda did not create the terrorists or their ideology, but the freedom agenda will help defeat them both." A United Nations resolution, which came into force Monday morning, called for ceasefire in Lebanon, but did not urge Hezbollah to be disarmed or dismantled.
