French President Jacques Chirac ended weeks of speculation Monday by suddenly announcing he would run for re-election, opening the door for two months of intense campaigning before voting starts in April. Chirac, 69, is expected to face a tight race against Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, the bitter rival he has been forced to govern with since 1997 in an awkward power-sharing deal known as "cohabitation."
